Elemental Gaze

A luminous face emerges through mirrored layers of blue and green, meeting the viewer with a gaze that feels at once human, elemental and difficult to place.

This open-edition fine-art giclée print preserves the square composition of Elemental Gaze within a generous integral white border. The complete 8 × 8-inch print is designed to fit a standard 8 × 8-inch frame and is supplied unmounted and unframed.

About the artwork

Elemental Gaze began without a predetermined figure or symbolic plan. Its forms emerged through an intuitive process of layering, reflection and symmetry, gradually gathering into something that seemed to look back.

The eyes hold the centre of the work, surrounded by intricate blue-green forms that might suggest leaves, water, feathers, glass or something less easily named. Human and elemental qualities appear to move through one another until it becomes difficult to tell where the face ends and the surrounding world begins.

There is tranquillity in its symmetry, but also an intensity. The figure feels both present and slightly beyond reach: part portrait, part apparition, part landscape.

I’m interested in what happens when an image reveals something I did not consciously set out to create. Elemental Gaze belongs to that process. Its meanings were not illustrated in advance; they appeared through the making.

Perhaps the figure is becoming part of the natural world. Perhaps the natural world is looking back through her.

The original mixed-media artwork was created in 2022.
